Solstice pattern giveaway

I love the freshness of our mild winters, but I am not a fan of waking up in the dark and coming home from work in the dark. This week included the shortest day of the year, so things will be getting sunnier from now on. Hurrah!

What better way to celebrate the winter solstice and the turning of the seasons than with a giveaway! (Okay, so I could dance widdershins around a winter bonfire, but my hair would get all smoky, so let’s stick with a giveaway.)

I am going to give away any two of my three patterns. The winner gets to choose which two. If you live in Australia or New Zealand, I will mail printed copies. If you live elsewhere, I will email PDFs because I have no idea how ouchy postage fees might be.

Granny Maud's Girl patterns

As Meatloaf sang, two out of three ain’t bad.

To enter, you must:

  • leave a comment below telling me what you like about this season or which two patterns you would choose or some other random thought
  • follow me on Instagram or on this blog.

If you follow me on Instagram and here on my blog, you can enter twice by leaving two comments.

I will close entries next Sunday 1 July at midnight local Western Australian time (which is midday the same day in New York, for example) and use a random number generator to select the winning comment after work on Monday evening.

And if you are not lucky enough to win copies, remember that they can be purchased from Etsy as PDF downloads and from Handcrafters House or Calico & Ivy as printed patterns.

  1. I’m not entering this gorgeous give-away, but only because I can already tell you all that two out of three are not only ‘not bad’, they’re great! I have the Australia and Scrappy Cushion patterns, and they’re really good; a lovely design, a very clear and easy to follow pattern, and a beautiful result. Don’t hesitate!

  2. I love the Squadron and Australia patterns, perfect for the little men in our life. Most patterns are rather girly so it’s refreshing to have Aussie patterns for the guys and for making gifts for international friends.

  3. Thanks for having a giveaway, Carla. I’d love to own and make both the Australia block and the aeroplanes! I love Winter for staying in for quilting or knitting without the guilt!

  4. I am IG and blog follower! I wish I lived closer so I could get some help with WordPress! Your blog looks so great. I have a lot to learn!

  5. I love all your blogs.
I live in the uk and we have just past midsummers day…so nights will be drawing in..

Love your patterns and would love to win scrappy cushions and Australia.
We have relatives in both Perth and Sydney…

  6. Just started following you on Instagram. Been following your blog for quite a while. I believe we have a mutual friend, Michele M. Love your patterns.

  7. What a great giveaway – thank you, Carla. I’d love to use the Australia pattern in a gift for my daughter, who lives in China. Maybe it will persuade her to come home!

    • I love following your blog and love seeing what you have designed and made. I particularly love the pillow pattern.

  8. In my corner of the world, it’s summer, but it’s been a chilly one so far. It’s more like spring, which is my favorite season.

  9. I love the winter 🌈 rainbows!
I also love your creative patterns- tresures to share!
I have already purchased Australia- so would love Scrappy Cushion and Squadron leader to add to my treasure chest!
    Xx Create on!
    Love 💕Trena

  10. Hi Carla! What a great giveaway! I have a dear friend who lives in Sydney so would for sure have to choose the Australia map and our choir director at church is nuts for anything aviation so of course the Squadron Leader quilt would be perfect. It’s high summer here in Colorado and hot so a cool breeze would be lovely!

  11. From now on, instead of feeling sad about the lessening light, I’m going to remember that I am sharing it with my Australian friends, and it is simply moving toward your turn!

  12. It’s hard to choose since all three are beautiful but having been in the air force, I would choose the plains and the Australia pattern

  13. Hi! Thank you for the giveaway! Your patterns look wonderful, I would love your airplane and scrappy cushion pattern.

  14. I just discovered your etsy shop! You have a very attractive and inviting shop, lovely photos, and great start. Best of luck with your fun venture. I enjoy my etsy shop. You continue to amaze me with your lovely prolific posts. Thanks for the generous give away. Though I am on the other side of the globe where we just celebrated our longest day and high summer, I am connected to Australia. My great grandparents emigrated to the Yukon Territory of Canada from Western Australia in Albany. (“The Knowing of Thomas James.”)

  15. i have to struggle to find something I like about this season. Maybe that fall will be coming eventually. I am not a summer gal at all. I’ll take the winter anytime. I did enjoy last week at Vacation Bible School with six kindergarteners. They are very active and fun.

  16. I love the summer! We are beaching it in Cocoa Beach, Florida and are taking our sun to the NASA space camp. I just purchased your Squadron pattern and bought the material. I can’t wait to jump into doing it when I return home. Thanks for the beautiful pattern!

  17. Love your Australia pattern as I lived in Melbourne for a year WWAAAYYY back in Jan 1973 to Jan 1974 as an exchange student….and my host family became MY family in all the most important ways of the heart. LOVE the Squad Leader one, too! You have a wonderful blog – thank you for all you do!

  18. On my side of the globe, days are long, not, and muggy this time of year. Also great for staying in and sewing. Your patterns are lovely. I would love the planes and Australia.

  19. Thanks for the giveaway. Since I’m from the US, Squadron Leader and Scrappy Cushion would suit me better. Look like fun patterns.

  20. Thanks for your giveaway! I would choose Squadron Leader and Scrappy Cushion, only because I don’t know many people in Australia to make the Australia pattern for. ( I have some Australian in my family tree, though – my Great Grandpa and his parents were from Victoria and NSW! 🙂 )

  21. I follow you on Instagram, too, and this is my FAVORITE part of the year here in the Northern Hemisphere…I like it hot and sunny. I am glad that you all get a bit more sunshine every day now – that’s the best part of the December solstice for us!

  22. How very generous of you. We certainly get cold winters over here on the Central Tablelands of NSW. We had a huge frost this morning- minus 6C. Brrr! It’s nice seeing the frost right up through the trees, so long as you are snug inside or in the car.

  23. My choice would be Australia & the cushion only because I don’t have anyone to make the planes for. Beautiful designs Carla.

  24. Thanks for the giveaway. I love winter as it is a good excuse to stay in my warm house and sew. Too cold for gardening! Cheers

  25. Oh I am in my element with the sun on my bones…don’t mind what season I am in, but clear blue skies and sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy…John Denvers’ words. I’d certainly go for the scrappy pattern as its one I don’t have, but the Australian one is excellent and would make a great gift for one of my friends who is in admiration of the bag I am making! I will follow you anywhere! 😜

  26. I would love the Australia and Squadron Leader patterns. I make quilts and laundry bags for Aussie Hero Quilts and these would be great to use for that.

  27. I feel your pain on winter, but luckily, we have finally moved into summer. I hate the cold, but I think it’s the darkness that kills me. Congrats again on your great patterns. I’d choose Scrappy Cushions and Squadron Leader.

  28. Hi, you are just a hop over the water. Following you on your blog, and on Instagram.I would so like the Australia pattern, as we have a niece there, Hugh’s brother, and a dear friend up in Townsville.

  29. I love ❤️ the Australia especially because evev though we live in Canada, we visit Australia often. Family brings us back – lucky us! The Scrappy pattern is great too. Thanks for the chance to win😘

  30. It’s been so nice to watch you begin your line of patterns — love the squadron leader one!! Just waiting for my son and d-i-l to say they are expecting so I have a solid excuse to buy it!!

  31. I don’t need to be entered in the give away but I wanted to commiserate with you over the shortest day of sunshine. I no longer have to get up and go to work but I vividly remember having to shlep children to and from school in the dark. So depressing!

  32. Not sure if I’ve made it in time due to time differences confusing my head!! I would love the Australia one and the block one please – going to start a patchwork class in September so could take these to do if I’m lucky!!! The nights are getting lighter for you from now on in – whoop!!!

  33. As always Carla your patterns and your work is very inspirational. I love the planes pattern and your scrappy cushion pattern. Winter is the time when I have a sewing retreat here in Sydney and I get to see all the wonderful work my friends are doing and again get inspiration from so many diverse lives.

I appreciate your comments and will reply by email.
