All of this wool arrived in the mail from Bendigo Woollen Mills this week. I think that this time I might really have bitten off more than I can chew.
I have thirteen months to knit 4 kilograms of wool.
It is 4 kilograms (that is almost 9 pounds) of wool in twenty 200-gram balls. Yes, 4 kilograms. It arrived in two enormous, sack-like parcels. It does not all fit in my large basket.
Oh well, the winter knitting weather is starting, and I have more than a year to knit the blanket/throw I promised my stepdaughter as a wedding present. I am using a free pattern by Bernat. So far, I have started knitting the test swatch. I am doing a proper test swatch, with borders and everything. This thing is huge, so I have to get it right first time.
The yarn I am using is the Bendigo Woollen Mills’ Luxury 10 ply (worsted or Aran weight). I have not bought from them before, but a friend recommended them for such a large order. I am really happy with the yarn; it feels lovely to knit with.

A blanket or throw rug. I am going to be kept a bit busy this year, I think!
Lovely colours and a beautiful sheen on the wool. Your comment about the start of knitting weather made me think of a fun knitting bag I saw, with the House Stark direwolf logo on it from Game of Thrones. Underneath was the caption: Winter is Coming. Knit Faster! Irrespective of whether you’re a GoT fan, it’s a good motto!
The wool really does feel nice. I hate scratchy wool.
I like the sound of the knitting bag. I have read the first two Game of Thrones books but have decided to skip the rest of the books and watch the series instead. That is completely unlike me. I always read the book first! Hey, I’ll need something to watch while knitting all this up!
Series 3 was released a couple of months ago. We have the last book in the series on the Kindle and I’m finding it increasingly hard to rip it away from the Husband so he gets some sleep before he goes to work…
WOW! You don’t do anything by halves, do you Carla! I started knitting up my four balls of Bendigo this week! And if I can get this ‘tunic’ finished this winter, I will think that is success! Good luck with your knitting plans! Is all that wool going into ONE throw rug? That will be a monster!
Nope. I really do push the edge of reason! When I think about how it took me a year to knit one skein into a scarf, I get nervous. This has no lace and is 10 ply not 2 ply, so I hope it goes faster.
I love your choice of colours. Are you going to show us a picture of the blanket you are going to knit? That is a lovely idea for a wedding present.
The bride-to-be chose the colours and they are very similar to the pattern photo. I don’t have a photo, but I will update the post to give a link to the free pattern. I should have included that!

Lovely colors. The chevrons are so crisp and modern looking. It will be a treasure!! I feel that way about fabric when i t arrives. 😉
We chose the pattern together using the powers of secret Pinterest boards. I wanted to make something they could keep and use for years.
I feel that way about wool, fabric and shoes. 🙂

Thank goodness we only have the one child so I am not setting myself up for a dangerous precedent. Imagine having to make something similar for each child in a large family!
I weave scarves using Bendigo 3-ply and I’ve been happy with the quality of their product and their delivery service. One of these weekends I’ll get to their shop in Bendigo. When I do, there will be a blog post for sure.
I will definitely buy from them again too. Maybe not for a while, at least not until I finish this!
